Intro

This book presents information on how to analyze risks to your networks and the steps needed to select and deploy the appropriate countermeasures to reduce your exposure to physical and network threats.

It also imparts the skills and knowledge needed to identify and counter some fundamental security risks and requirements, inlcuding Internet security threats and measures (audit trails IP sniffing/spoofing etc.) and how to implement security policies and procedures.

In addition, this book also covers security and network design with respect to particular vulnerabilities and threats. It also covers risk assessment and mitigation and auditing and testing of security systems.

From this book, the reader will also learn about applying the standards and technologies required to build secure VPNs, configure client software and server operating systems, IPsec-enabled routers, firewalls and SSL clients.

Chapter coverage includes identifying vulnerabilities and implementing appropriate countermeasures to prevent and mitigate threats to mission-critical processes. Techniques are explored for creating a business continuity plan (BCP) and the methodology for building an infrastructure that supports its effective implementation.

A public key infrastructure (PKI) is an increasingly critical component for ensuring confidentiality, integrity and authentication in an enterprise. This comprehensive book will provide essential knowledge and skills needed to select, design and deploy a PKI to secure existing and future applications.

Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, 2nd Edition

Intro

PHP and MySQL go hand in hand; the former has been carefully adapted, through the efforts of the open-source community, to the latter. For situations that require dynamic content but don’t merit the complexity and development time of Java or .NET enterprise applications, the PHP language and the MySQL database server fit the bill perfectly. That’s the point Hugh Williams and David Lane make in Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, which combines language tutorials with application design advice to yield a comprehensive picture of its subjects at a reasonable price. Williams and Lane–both Australian academics who use an online wine store in many of their examples–deserve tremendous kudos for their way of presenting recommended coding strategies. Though the code listings themselves aren’t remarkably well commented, the authors do a commendable job of explaining in prose what the code is up to.

Case in point: The ever-essential task of using PHP to open a connection to a MySQL database, submit a query to that database, receive a response, and format the returned rows, if any. Descripción

Mucho se habla del calentamiento global, pero poco se sabe del fenómeno que está bajo la investigación científica y que también podría llegar a hacer mucho daño. “Un mundo a oscuras”, el documental de la BBC que fue transmitido por Discovery Channel, hizo referencia a este proceso por el cual, al disminuir la radiación solar que llega a la superficie terrestre, se ve amenazada la fotosíntesis.

El llamado “oscurecimiento global” es producido por las diminutas partículas que flotan en las zonas altas de la atmósfera, provenientes del humo de motores y fábricas, cenizas de incendios forestales, erupciones volcánicas y del polvo generado por la actividad humana. Todos estos desechos pueden llegar hasta la estratósfera y retener o reflejar los rayos solares, situación que trae como consecuencia no sólo un oscurecimiento sino una reducción de las temperaturas ambientales en todo el planeta.

Según el documental de BBC, el oscurecimiento global (OG) pondría en peligro el abastecimiento natural de oxígeno al planeta, sumándose así a las otras amenazas contra la vegetación, es decir, la tala indiscriminada de árboles para madera y la quema de leña para calefacción en los países pobres.

Si bien este nuevo fenómeno implicaría una “esperanza” ante el calentamiento global, los estudios desarrollados sobre la materia indicarían que ambos problemas están relacionados debido a la procedencia de los contaminantes aunque, por ser más visible y molesto a corto plazo, el OG es definido como más grave. Sin embargo, a partir de ahora se abre un nuevo camino en la lucha contra el cambio climático, ya que la detección y la información existente tanto del calentamiento como del oscurecimiento global, permitirá a los científicos seguir de cerca la evolución de este fenómeno combinado que amenaza a la Tierra.
